June 30 Seine
5:30 pm, a day of hot, hazy sunshine. The water was mucky with what looked like little bits of brown phytoplankton joined up in ropes. Several children attended with grandparents or other relatives. Laurie pulled one side of the net with her truck, the other was brought in the usual way with human power. Glen reports: Water temp at 40 cm deep on float =11C. Air temp = 24 C. Salinity at dock float 40 cm deep =31 ppt.

This was the most diverse catch of Herring in about 40+ beach seine days over the last 7 years. Total amount caught was about 800 Herring, with about 60 percent of them in the 95 to 155 mm range. But there were also a lot of other sizes caught, as the following sample tally shows.
Besides DNA sampling, which occurred with 10 fish, some other physical characteristics of the Herring may be able to help identify certain Salish Sea Herring spawning populations. Besides size differences, body shapes and colors varied quite a bit. Some Herring in the same size range were stout, others slender. The color of the fish also may be linked to the body shape. Some Herring were markedly more blue-backed than others. In the past beach seines we have rarely seen the blue backs, as they have seemed to only occur in Herring over 140 mm long, which we rarely have caught. But today, the blue was pronounced in some (rarely) in the 100 mm+- size range. A certain other size ranges, like around 140 to 150 mm, there was a higher incidence of blue backs. There were larger ones than that which had no blue. Some of the larger ones had yellow tinges.
Herring, samples measured at 95, (very blue), 96, 96, 102, 113, 118, 135, 140, (blue), 140 (blue), 143 (med blue),148, 148, 150 (blue), 150 (blue), 150, 155 (very blue), 155, 160, 163 (yellow), 164 (partly blue), 164, 164, 164 (partly blue), 167, 170, 192, 210.
