July 6, 2012, Cowlitz Bay 16:20 to 19:00

At 16:20, hazy and hot. Water murky and greenish, low tide. Yesterday was our first hot day in a while.
Many participants came and went.

July 6, 2012 first seine

16:20: A rear axle fell off one of the scrap metal trucks into the bay. We caught it with our first seine, along with a large branch that had snagged against it. There was a lot of fiddling around, trying to save the net from getting holed, and ending up with the transmission getting dragged up the beach. We had to do a second pull.

July 6, 2012 Lavage

We collected 50 juvenile chinook for lavage. Some of them were having trouble breathing. We've been having a wet spring, but yesterday and today were hot. There is an alga bloom in the bay, and we speculate that that creates anoxic conditions, where there isn't enough oxygen in the water.

Our chinook have been eating a variety of creatures, from accordion-folded fish like smelt, to flies, larval fish, and plankton. For the first time in my memory, several of the stomach contents included disorganized masses of what looked like brown alga.
