Sept 11, 2010 Cowlitz Bay Beach Seine
At 16:00 it was overcast and clammy with a light breeze, flood tide. The water temperature was 3ºC in the gravel at about half a meter's depth. Air temp was 15ºC.
First Seine, 16:30
We set the net, pulled it in, and selected out the 18 salmon into their holding pen. Then, some people counted fish and others tossed them out. The following count represents the minimum amount of each type of fish in the net:
Flounder: 1, with a massive tumor near the anus.
Greenling, Kelp: 1
Gunnel, Penpoint: 1
Herring: 1
Perch, Shiner: 25
Perch, Striped: 27
Pipefish (Syngnathus leptorhynchus - these are straightened out, emerald colored seahorses)
Salmon: 18
Sculpin: Buffalo, great, staghorn, and other
Smelt: 10
Stickleback, Three-spine: 3
Tubesnouts: 117
Kelp crab
Shrimp: lots
Lion's Mane Jelly in the wrack, which was mostly eelgrass.

Lavage
It finally happened! Earlier in the year, our stomach samples consisted mainly of shrimp, crab larvae, copepods, and fish. This time, many of the salmon had been gorging on those little flies that hover above the water in late summer. Mmmm.
It seemed as though more of the fish had parasitic copepods on them. We removed most of the ones we saw with forceps or fingers. They make excellent forehead decorations.

15:30 to 19:00. Overcast, wind variable 3-7 knots. Water visibility poor. Air temp=16 C. Low tide @ 12:42=2.3 ft. High tide @ 22:14= 8.8ft. Water temp at 1 foot deep 5 feet from shore =13 C. Salinity=1.025 (25 ppt).
We did 2 beach seines. Altogether caught 45 different juvenile chinook up to about 200 mm.; 1 herring at 78mm.; 10 smelt @ 58 to 82 mm (mean of 70mm),; 1 kelp greenling @ 30 cm.; some dozens of 70 mm unidentified shrimp about 80mm.; (5) 3 spine stickleback 25mm to 75 mm.; Shiner perch about 40 each pull no measurements. Approx 20 unidentified perch. 4 great sculpins in a single haul 2 measured 24 cm, 28 cm. 5 small sculpins. 1 penpoint gunnel at 168 mm. Tubesnouts 1st pull approx 110, 2cnd pull approx 150 from about 90mm to about 175 mm. Striped perch 1st pull approx 40 from 60- 160 mm. Second pull approx same haul.
