Julie L: COASST walk to Hammond 11:00: Sunny and mild. At Clay Point, green-brown plankton bloom with maybe 5,000 3” perch at its borders. At Hammond, 1 juvenile gull, 1 Bald Eagle, 1 Great Blue Heron, 7 humans.
Fred & Donna A: 14:45 Severson Bay: sunny, calm, 2 or 3 gulls calling from a distance, 1 diving duck off Fishery, 1 GBHeron at Huntley’s. Very few birds seen between here and along east shore from dock.
15:00 North Bay: 2 gulls sitting on Gamble’s dinghy.
15:30 towards Cowlitz Dock: About 20 Glaucous Gulls and 20 smaller birds, dark-plumaged with red bills sitting on the beach at Sandy Point. Three or 4 diving ducks about 200 yards off Sandy Point. Five cormorants. Around 15:40, 20 - 30 smaller gulls with white underneath, black band on tail, black wingtips, grey patch on head hunting flying insects off Frances’ Cove.

Julie L: Sunny and fresh. In bloom in the garden: Cucumber, tomato, Rose of Sharon, Hollyhock, calendula, nasturtium, pansy, Mexican sunflower, petunia (this is the same list as from Aug 22). Parsley, catnip, corn, calendula, lavender have gone to seed. A tart red apple has ripened, fallen, and been eaten, the Gravesteins are just about ready for first harvest. Prunes are in season.
Laurie G: 200 feet of flotsam along the back eddy line of North Beach in the water, including grass, bladderwrack, Lion’s Mane Jellies, jetsam, etc.
Community conversation: The yellowjacket population is different this year. In some areas, they haven’t appeared at all, but some similar looking bees are out. Bald-faced hornets are doing well, probably increasing. Tent caterpillars were not active this year.
