June 22, 2012 first (and only) seine
16:22: Everything went smoothly. No rocks, no boat trouble, efficiency on the part of the net haulers and fish counters. Yay, us!
Measurements of fish by Glen R and recorded by Grace H. Of the thousands of Salmon netted in the beach seine, those collected for sample measurements came from an attempt to get size ranges, except for Chinook (which the larger ones sizes recorded by Russel B crew). This should provide clues towards varying populations (within species) appearing together in this sub-tidal seine area.

June 8, 2012, Cowlitz Bay
Data from Julie and Glen:
At 15:35, cumulus clouds around the horizon but mostly bright sunlight overhead. Air temp = 58 Fh. 14 C.; Wind variable 2-6 mph. About 1 inch of rain yesterday. Low tide of -1.3 @ 14:30. High tide of 9.1 @ 22:32. Water visibility excellent, to 8 meters. Water temp 50 cm deep at dock float = 54 Fh, 12 C. Salinity at dock float 50 cm deep=33 ppt, or 1.026 D20.
Around dock fewer than 5 adult Barn Swallows.
In binoc scan of water:
1 Glaucous Winged Gull,
1 Pigeon Guillemot,
1 Northwestern Crow at Beach.
Many people came and went, some to observe or assist with the seine, others on their own business. Steve put his boat in the water and Derek landed his, both at the seine site. Waldron Freight hauled some passengers. Java arrived partway through and had to be distracted with sticks.

June 8, 2012 Cowlitz Bay, first seine
The first set, at 4:15 p.m, was a difficult one. The boat wouldn't reverse, and the net caught a rock, which made it impossible to pull until we figured out how to release the rock. Once we caught the fish, several people had several agendas. Russel was concerned with the juvenile chinook, which get special treatment because of their endangered status. Glen was looking for herring and other forage fish, as well as anything that could be photographed or shown to the children. He measured with the help of Grace H. Laurie set up a de-parasiting station with Kaiya and some forceps. Here is a partial list of the catch:

June 8, 2012 Cowlitz Bay, second seine
Because of only catching a few, very small Chinooks, we did a second seine at 5:35 p.m. This time, Russel noticed that the water inside the net was considerably warmer than outside the net. We have been really working on reducing fish mortality but this time around, a few fish did die. Maybe it had to do with the warm water?

June 8, 2012 Cowlitz Bay, lavage
We lavaged about 37 Chinook salmon and 2 Quillback Rockfish. The salmon had eaten a variety of things, and, as usual, seemed to have strong individual preferences for what they would stuff themselves with: Euphausids, larval fish, juvenile sand lances, and other items. I don't remember any insects this time around, although we were sitting under a tent-caterpillar infested alder. Caterpillar frass kept falling into the trays. I washed my hair that evening.
